For those who are looking for a small, portable grill they won't be ashamed to have seen in their apartment or on a small patio, the Bodum Frykat can't be beat. It's lightweight and easily portable, perfect for someone who wants to grill on occasion but doesn't have outdoor space for something larger or more permanent.
It's SMALL. Perfect for a meal for one, or an entree for a family of four. Any more than that would be tough, but again, it's not designed for a suburban backyard. However, that same family might find it a good backup grill to use for vacations.
Functionally, I appreciate how tightly it closes, making it easy to transport, even when it has charcoal already inside. On a variety of surfaces it remains sturdy. In addition, it's fun and stylish. I love that it comes in a variety of colors. If being cute helps to get more use in your home, it's worth a few extra dollars.
We've used it several times and did not find the handle to be too hot to handle with minimal protection. It's easy to use straight out of the box and comes with good instructions. I've already recommended it to several friends!

This would be my first grill, being that I live in a small apartment without a patio I need something small. We ended up taking this out to the courtyard to cook some sausages and burgers. It can definitely hold its own against a larger grill, that's for sure. Surprisingly, this grill held 5 large Italian Sausages with no problems whatsoever. Later on we were able to cook 2 lbs of hamburger (split into 6 patties) all at the same time. Once you figure out how much charcoal is needed, grilling is a breeze. Beforehand we didn't have enough and the burgers started falling apart. To extinguish I simply placed the lid on the grill, closed the vent and set it in the middle of my garage floor. It was cold that night about 8 hours later.
We will definitely be taking this on our camping trip to Colorado later in the year. I would highly recommend it to apartment dwellers!!!

Loved the ease of use and way coals die back so quickly once you close vents. But best of all the food grilled with great evenness and plenty of juiciness. Looks great too as a bonus.

As of this writing, I seem to be the only one who rates it 5 stars. The existing 5 star review isn't a review at all so it doesn't count.
To tell you the truth, I was sitting on the fence. It all came down to price. Should I penalize it for being $15 or so more than its closest competitor (Weber Smokey Joe Gold). Let's compare them.
The SJ is a tad bigger. That's a plus if you want a little more capacity but a minus if you are more interested in portability.
The Frykat has sturdier legs. They are made of tubular steel instead of bent steel ribbons. But guess what - it won't matter because they both get the job done. Of the two, I give the nod to the tubular steel because in addition to being a little stronger, it is also a little safer as there are no edges to possibly scrape or cut you.
They both have heat insulated handles but the vents on the Frykat are just under the handle whereas on the SJ, they are off to the side. That's not a design flaw as some people have called it. It is more of a design choice.
I believe that Bodum is going for aesthetics in addition to function. Why else would they offer so many bright colors? Placing the vents under the handle (they are opened or closed by rotating the handle) produces a more symmetrical appearance, which studies have confirmed, is more pleasing to the human eye.
In my opinion, none of the color schemes is uhh... shall we say manly? Not even the black one because of the red accents. This product may be designed to appeal more to women and children. I'm sure that Bodum's market research came into play with respect to appearance and price.
The bottom line is whether looks and to some extent portability are important to you. Is it worth $15 more? That's for you to judge. It is every bit as good as the SJ Gold. It attempts to be eye-catching and different from run-of-the-mill black and gray grills. It is something I can store in plain sight. If I do that with a regular looking grill, my wife would tell me to put it in a closet or something.
They perform equally well. If looks don't matter, spend less and get the SJ. If you like the shape and colors of the Frykat, fork over $15 more. It's that easy.

I have not yet purchased the grill, although I probably will. On the Amazon's website for this grill there are instructions which can be downloaded as a pdf. The instructions specifically state: "ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR HANDS BY WEARING BARBEQUE GLOVES . . . " when using this grill. Yet C. Geiger states: "The vent will burn your hand -- Serious design flaw: The heat vent (that controls the temp) is right near the handle = burnt hands if you aren't careful." Apparently he/she did not read the instructions!
