| Customer Reviews: Outstanding; just make sure you have it set up right April 29, 2010 BSJ1 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Bought this from Amazon for the cheapest price on the web, particularly when you factor in the free shipping. Mine was packed well and sat on a pallet. It is very heavy, so make sure you have it in position before taking it off the pallet.
The unit is quiet, much quieter than the standard small 110v compressors you see at Sears/HD/Lowes. There's only a light hum if you close the garage door. It is also extremely efficient - fills rapidly and can run continuously on the Ingersoll Rand all season lubricant. Provides plenty of power. Very simple and straightforward design - which should make it more durable and reliable in the long run. IR tech support is excellent and these are amongst the best compressors you can buy. Basically, they allow you to focus on the job, not on setup and tool management.
A few things to note when buying this in case you don't have experience with this type of product.
1. You will need an air regulator to regulate pressure out to the tools. Unlike the smaller models at Home Improvement stores, this does not have a built-in regulator - just a gauge measuring tank pressure. You may also want to consider a lubricator. IR makes them and Amazon/Northern Tool have the lowest prices I could find.
2. While the unit is rated at 30 AMPs, it actually spikes much higher at startup. It would keep shutting off when we had it on a 30 Amp breaker. Talked to IR tech support (who were very helpful). They recommend the unit be hard-wired (not a plug) and that it be on a 60 Amp circuit. This meant rewiring (EXPENSIVE) using 6 gauge copper (EXPENSIVE), a new breaker and a hardwired connection with a disconnect. Could you get away with less ? Perhaps. But I wanted the warranty protection, wanted IR's recommended settings in case something went wrong and wanted to be up to code.
3. The manual drain valve at the bottom is a PAIN to get at. Either mount the unit high enough to reach easily or get something that allows you to drain it without having to crawl around on the floor with a pair of needle-nose pliers. (Ask me how I know...)
4. The 1/2" NPT outlet is nice, but be aware the local home improvement stores may not carry 1/2" fittings. I had to get my regulator, connectors and hose online.
5. The manual recommends IR All-Season lubricant if you want continuous duty.
Overall, I'm very very happy with this purchase.
Great compressor February 19, 2009 Aaron J. Reams (Pa USA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Great buy.Pumps up quick and is fairly quiet.Only thing I would reconmend is before you bolt it to the floor,go to the hardware and get a brass 1/2in. 90 street elbow,12in. 1/2in. straight and a 1/2in. ball valve for the drain on the bottom of the tank.Put the ball valve out in the open so you can drain the tank easy.I did this.I wouldnt even want to try and drain it with that petcock. Also do not buy the start up kit.I did just to find that the kit that was reconmended was for a different model and the air filters wont work with mine, and I found the oil locally was only $6.00 a quart. The kit has 2 pints.
Purchased four months ago December 11, 2009 J. Gearhart 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this air compressor from Amazon about 4 months ago. So far it has run flawlessly. It runs relatively quiet for its size and power, although no reciprocating air compressor is really what anyone would call quiet. This unit re pressurizes very quickly under most loads. I heartily recommend this unit for a heavy home user or small shop.
Excellent Compressor June 19, 2010 S. Roberts I bought this compressor because I wanted to get into auto painting and my 5.5 CFM Lowes compressor could not cut it. I did my research and compared this compressor to locally available compressors and other compressors at a similar price point around the web, but nothing else compared in price/performance ratio.
I purchased from Amazon and the free delivery (including lift-gate and basic placement service) made this an even better deal than the other competitors whom charge extra for unloading off the truck (lift-gate).
When you receive this compressor, what you will need is ~2 pints of compressor oil lubricant (I bought synthetic for $6/pint at Lowes locally) and your own power cable and plug to wire into the compressor (needs 230V/single phase/60Hz., using the black/red/green wires (hot/hot/ground) [white-common is unused]). While on the power subject, another reviewer recommended using 6AWG wiring and 60AMP plug/receptacle/breakers... THIS IS NOT NEEDED. Unfortunately, I took this bad advice and wired a 14-60R connector into my garage for this compressor prior to receipt using 6/3+10AWG ground cable and purchased the plug and receptacle online for >$100 combined. Too bad my compressor has never used over 40 Amps even during spikes so far... So, my recommendation is be safe and wire it for 40 or 50 AMPs using readily available parts at the big box stores. The crimp connectors and wiring used by Ingersoll Rand in the wiring box appear to be 10AWG stranded wire and you will need two crimp plugs (yellow 12-10AWG style) and one crimp fork connector (also yellow 12-10AWG style) for your three power connections. Also, one intake air filter is included, but an air regulator is not included.
Optional (but you really should get these too): As stated in other reviews, the drain is difficult to access. I removed the entire drain plug and replaced it with an elbow, extension and ball valve. This is what I did starting from the removed drain plug: [1/4 Male ID - 1/4 Male ID] <-> [1/4 Female ID - 3/8 Male ID] <-> [3/8 Female ID - 3/8 Female ID Elbow] <-> [12" long black pipe 3/8 Male ID - 3/8 Male ID extension] <-> [3/8 Female ID - 3/8 Female ID ball valve]. Also, I bought an Ingersoll Rand Combination Air System Accessories - 1/2in., Filter, Regulator, Model# P39344600 and so far it is performing great.
I have tested the compressor with my IWATA LPH400 HVLP paint gun while painting and it quickly compresses the air back to the cutoff point (125psi). Once the compressor kicks on, the tank will still build pressure. So at 100% air consumption load (for me) the compressor will still refill and turn back off and I never have to let off the trigger. I have read some reviews about people thinking this compressor could not handle automotive painting, but if it was dedicated to that purpose, it could handle it with ease. I am using this compressor non-commercially, but I bet this compressor could support a small shop.
In conclusion, I am very happy with this purchase. Also, the air outlet is 1/2 Female NPT if anyone needed to know that. I used a brass nipple from this outlet into my regulator/filter and then flexible hose from there and converted to 1/4NPT (3/8 hose) the rest of the way out.
Great Compressor December 6, 2006 Alan (Ocean Springs, MS USA) 5 out of 9 found this review helpful
I would have given this compressor a 5, except the shipping crate was flimsy in my opinion. Other than the packaging, this is a great compressor. It is quite, powerful and meets all the requirements that I ask of a professional tool.
